investigation. meantime, it is set to be another dangerous week on the weather front. more than 30 million people at risk for severe storms today after that deadly and devastating weekend of tornados. certainly in parts of the midwest and the south. al will be along shortly. with a full forecast in a bit. we'll start with former president biden. his office revealing he's fighting an aggressive form of prostate cancer just months after leaving office. we have complete coverage this morning. we'll start with gabe gutierrez. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president biden is at home in wilmington, delaware as his family considers his treatment options. here at the white house, the current president is wishing his one-time political opponent a successful recovery. this morning well wishes are streaming in for former president biden after his personal office revealed the 82-year-old has an aggressive form of prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.

the diagnosis came friday after biden reported urinary symptoms which led doctors to find a small nodule on his prostate. >> once the cancer spreads to bones, it's no longer curable, it's very treatable and very controllable. >> reporter: president trump posting he and the first lady are saddened to hear about biden's diagnosis and wishing him a fast and successful recovery. this morning, the former president on social media thanking supporters and saying, cancer touches us all. cancer has devastated the biden family before as vice president he led a moon shot effort to find cures for the disease after his son beau died in 2015. >> one of the most devastating words anyone can hear is cancer. >> in 1998 then senator biden battled two brain aneurysms that threatened to end his political year. walter reed white house exam was in february last year when a physician assessed he was fit

for duty. but during his presidency, biden faced mounting questions about his health, age, and mental fitness, which ultimately led him to drop his bid for re-election. this weekend axios published video with robert herr. at some points during the interview, biden appeared to struggle to remember key dates and details. >> do you have any idea where this material would have been before it got moved into the garage? >> well, if it was 2013, when did i stop being vice president? 2017. >> so i was vice president. >> reporter: tomorrow a new book is said to be published raising more questions about biden's inner circle may have concealed any cognitive decline during his time at the white house. something the bidens deny in a recent interview. >> they're all wro.

there's nothing to sustain that. >> reporter: piece of the special counsel audio biden spokesperson says his administration released the transcript more than a year ago. and that the audio does nothing but confirm what is already public. meanwhile, major question today that we don't yet have an answer earlier screenings?er missed in savannah. >> gabe gutierrez, thank you so much. >> we want to bring in dr. john torres. good morning. thank you for waking up with us this morning. what strikes me in this statement are more aggressive and with me it's a cyst to the bone. what does this mean for an 82-year-old? >> what this mean is exactly that, the cancer left the prostate and gone to over parts of the body, particularly the bone, which this type of cancer typically does. he has a gleeson score of 9. gleeson scores go from 6 to 10. 8, 9 and 10 are the aggressive forms of this, meaning it is more likely to spread. and with cancers and most over illnesses, the older you are, the harder it is to treat.

so we're in that category here with him being 82 years old, it will be a tougher battle for him. >> what are those treatment options? >> in this case it's hormone sensitive. testosterone fuels this. it's the feud for this tumor. cut out the testosterone, they're more likely to starve the tumor. they're not going to cure it, they'll make it slow growing. it becomes much, much longer to spread more. in this case, they do that with medications that block testosterone throughout the body which can have side effects as well. that's a decision biden and his family have to make as to how far he wants to go with this treatment. >> dr. torres, a question a lot of people are asking, why this cancer may not have been detected sooner, because it's so far along into the bones. is this something that normally would be caught sooner? >> that's the issue with prostate cancer. that's why we're seeing this year to year increase of prostate cancer. since around 2014, we started cutting out -- we started out cutting annual psa testing on a regular basis and put it into the category of having

discussionwith your doctor. so not as many people are getting that psa test, which means we're not detecting as many prostate cancers so we're seeing that rate increase. there are symptoms associated with this and you can get early stage and late stage symptoms. the early stage typically tends to be symptoms around the prostate itself, meaning that you have issues with yet geting up late at night, getting up many times at night to urinate. you end up having problems when you try to urinate to begin with and seeing blood in the urine as well. later stage prostate cancer symptoms. in his case, that's probably what he ended up finding out more that bone pain and these types of things associated with later types of cancers. and so, it can be missed. the prostate is difficult to diagnose because it is so far inside the body and that's why both the psa testing and digital rectal exam, which they felt a nodule on his and ended up treating it are important. but this is important discussion to have with your doctor. >> americans wishing the biden family strength today. dr. torres, we appreciate your time. thank you. another major story, severe

weather tens of millions in the path of the next outbreak after a weekend of deadly storms across the midwest and south. look at that. large tornadoes touching down in several states, blamed for at least 28 deaths and search and rescue efforts still under way. al is standing by with his full forecast. let's get to nbc's kathy park from hard-hit london, kentucky this morning. kathy, good morning. >> reporter: hey, savannah, good morning to you. yeah, one of those tornadoes touched down in this community. and early reports suggest this was an ef-3 with wind speeds of more than 135 miles per hour. what's left is now a massive debris field, home after home completely ripped apart. and in this drone shot, you can actually see the scope of the damage and almost make out the path the tornado took, wiping out everything in its way. this morning, millions across a central and southern plains bracing for even more potentially dangerous severe weather. it comes after at least ten states were hit by tornadoes this weekend.

>> oh! >> reporter: including several on sunday alone. like colorado, this twister blowing debris off buildings. and more fierce winds whipping up in kansas, while in missouri, entire neighborhoods in st. louis are picking up the pieces. >> and i open the door and the whole thing was just open. >> reporter: after a massive ef-3 tornado devastated thousands of homes, killing multiple people. the same storm system sweeping through kentucky, taking 19 more lives. >> right now all our efforts are still focussed on searching and rescuing anyone who might still be in danger. >> reporter: many residents in disbelief. >> you see this on tv, but you don't expect this to happen to someone in your family, let alone you. >> reporter: with more severe weather ahead, there's growing concern over staffing and budget cuts to the national weather service. one example coming recently during a tornado outbreak in

jackson, kentucky, where a union official said it's usual staff and meteorologist was reduced and left without an overnight forecaster. but the agency telling nbc news, the office remained fully staffed through the duration of the event using surge staffing. and back here in kentucky, we're also hearing so many stories of survival. in fact, one family telling us they were inside the hallway of this home when the tornado came through. incredibly everyone made it out alive without any injuries. hard to believe when you see the devastation this close. now it's a race to salvage what they can, personal heirlooms, keepsakes as this next storm moves in this week. savannah? >> those images are incredible. kathy, thank you very much. we want to say good morning to al right now. al, this was a rough go for a lot of folks across that region. and there's more for them still to come. >> that's the big problem, peter, savannah, good morning. and good morning to you. unfortunately we've got a multi-day event with this system.

storms will be moving from the plains to the ozarks. we have a severe threat that's going to be ramping up this afternoon. we're talking damaging hail, two inches or more in diameter. wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour. but we've got this area of enhanced risk of where we could see ef-2 or stronger tornadoes, from kansas city, springfield, oklahoma city, down to dallas. so we're watching that. then tomorrow, this storm pushes east into the tennessee valley. the threat will increase in the afternoon, nocturnal tornadoes, twice as deadly as your normal ones. look at this area, from paducah, nashville, memphis, down to birmingham, huntsville, ef-2 tornadoes possible with torrential rain and strong winds. it moves east into georgia and the carolinas. a few storms possible especially late in the afternoon on wednesday. we've got a wide swath of one to three inches of rain, guys. but some areas could be even looking at more. and the areas already have been inundated, so we're talking about the possibility of flash flooding as well.

guys? >> all right, al. thank you so much. also this morning, we are learning more about the surreal scene that played out here in new york over the weekend. a mexican naval training vessel crashing into the brooklyn bridge, killing two crew members, injuring at least 22 overs and forcing one of the nation's busiest bridges to be shut down for hours. nbc's sam brock joins us from the sea port district where that ship is still docked this morning. sam, good morning to you. >> reporter: yeah, it's right over my shoulder. savannah, good morning. the sheer impact of those masts crashing into the underside of the brooklyn bridge left them in that l. formation that you see right now over there. there were crew members on the masts at the time. according to the mexican navy, as you mentioned, two of the crew members were killed nearly another dozen critically injured while at the same time officials say this ship headed out in the opposite direction toward the ocean but lost power, lost

steering and calamity ensued. from multiple angles -- >> what is going on? a slow motion catastrophe playing out at the brooklyn bridge saturday night. >> it's hitting the bridge. >> reporter: incredulous new yorkers a training ship on a goodwill tour and trio of 160 foot tall masts crumbling in heart stopping fashion under one of the most famous bridges in the world. >> we have at least a dozen people injured on that vessel. >> reporter: divers were launched protectively, though nypd officials say all 277 people on board were accounted for. crew members who appear to have been on the topmost rung can be seen swinging violently in videos shared online as many overs were left dangling. the mexican navy confirmed two people so far have died with nearly a dozen in critical condition. >> the captain that was maneuvering the ship lost, i guess, power of the ship and the

current mechanical function caused the ship to go right into the pillar of the bridge. >> reporter: witnesses simply stunned by what they were seeing. >> i saw the top of it snap off. and it kept on snapping. >> reporter: in video taken before the crash, you can see crew members blanketing those very masts. >> they're all celebrating, people were like dancing, singing, but there was people on the masts standing up. and it hit the top shelf and the mast came down and the people were just hanging from there. ♪ >> reporter: overnight a vigil to honor those killed and those injured as the new york emergency management commissioner tells nbc news the quick reaction from first responders likely saved lives. >> they're on scene almost immediately helping get critically injured patients off of the ships on to the pier. getting them to the hospitals. it was incredibly well orchestrated by the fdny and ems and harbour units. >> reporter: now, the u.s. coast guard, guys, tells us that

foreign ships do require tug escorts depending upon the vessel. in this case, the mexican ship that crashed into the brooklyn bridge did have a tug escort that very likely might be part of the ntsb investigation. as for the structural integrity of the famous bridge, officials say it is not damage and traffic is flowing freely. savannah, peter. >> i rode across it this morning. sam, thank you very much. more to get to including a new push for peace in ukraine. president trump hoping to make progress toward a ceasefire today during separate phone calls with vladimir putin and ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy. talks have come on the heels of russia's largest drone attack since the invasion began, more than three years ago. nbc's chief international correspondent keir simmons and he joins us now. keir, good morning. >> reporter: hey, peter, good morning to you. that potentially pivotal phone call between president trump and president putin is under way right now at 7:00 a.m. on the west coast. the vice president just telling reporters the white house is

boost traffic safety walk s.f. and vision zero supporters will begin their push today by holding a rally outside city hall at 1230, where there will be a memorial for pedestrian lives lost. there are eight traffic fatalities reported so far in the city, with several more under investigation. advocates are vowing to continue their work until the goal of zero traffic fatalities is reached. good morning. i'm bob redell. a red flag warning remains in effect until tonight for a small part of the bay area. as you can see on this map, the national weather service has issued this red flag warning for the northern half of the central valley, including sacramento and redding, and also solano county. meteorologists and fire departments are concerned at the dry, gusty winds combined with the heat make it more likely that wildfires could catch and spread quickly. let's get a look at that forecast for this monday with meteorologist kari hall. we are seeing temperatures warming up for those inland areas along with those gusty winds, and we will continue to see hotter

friday morning making a mad dash across nine lanes of highway, dropping their clothes in this industrial area. some haven't been seen since. >> they have friends and family members who are helping them and concealing then and helping them move. >> reporter: hours after their escape, at least one inmate seen in new orleans popular french quarter before being taken back into custody. of the seven still on the run, one is a convicted killer, four more are charged with murder or attempted murder. leaving many in the big easy on edge. >> you don't know where they at, who they're in touch with, who they're talking to. they might be -- who knows, in your backyard one day. >> reporter: the sheriff who oversees the jail alleging this is an inside job. >> it's almost impossible for anybody to get out of this facility without help from the outside. >> reporter: three jail employees have been placed on administrative leave. who specifically needs to be held accountable and how? >> it seems like everyone except for the police. they seem to be doing their job. >> reporter: where is the

sheriff today? >> i don't know. hopefully mining the jail. >> reporter: now as the manhunt enters a fourth day, police ask the public to help bring the escapees to justice. >> ro ryan, how are authorities tracking down the rest of the inmates still believed to be out there? >> reporter: that's the key question, peter. i would imagine needle in a hay stack is really an understatement here. but state police say they do have good intelligence on all zen of those men. they do believe they are still here in louisiana and they point to the public as a key indicator helping them find these men, pointing to that reward money as well as fbi and state and local collaboration as a real force multiplier. meanwhile, the mayor of new orleans here stressing to the public that they are safe during this manhunt. highlighting all of the weddings and graduations and everything going on this weekend that has made this city what it is, even as this manhunt continues. peter? >> the big easy feeling uneasy

and getting a little more sleep. unfortunately what that first alarm does is interrupting some of the best stages of sleep. the best solution is to set your alarm for the last possible time and commit to getting out of bed. which can be challenging. >> so you looked at the differences between men and women. every husband and wife, couple has this situation. the wives it turns out are more likely to hit the snooze than men are, why is that? >> we did see that women on average snooze a little bit more, press the snooze button a little bit more than do men. and we think that's kind of the contributing to that. but largely women often wear a hat inside the home and outside and have more responsibilities than do men. caring for children. if your child wakes up and the mother is running in to get the child and then they're shorter on sleep, they're probably going to reach for the snooze alarm in the morning because they're not getting enough sleep. >> i pressed snooze this morning which i rarely do. if you press snooze with this
